Change Button Images

There are several different ways you can replace the image on a button: search for symbols, select an image from a library, import an existing photo, use the camera to take a new photo, or select an AI-generated image (see Use AI to Generate Images for Buttons).

Search for Symbols

Note: When searching for symbols, your search will be based on the current vocabulary language, not the device language. For example, if you are in a Spanish vocabulary, your device doesn't need to be set to Spanish to get accurate search results.

  1. Select Menu and Edit Page.

  2. Select the button and select Edit This Button.  

  3. Select Select Image.

  4. Select the search  icon in the top right corner.

  5. Enter an image name or description.

  6. Select Search. Image names will be listed with preview images.

  7. Select the image you want.

  8. Select Save.

  9. Select Done to exit edit mode.

Select an Image from a Library

  1. Select Menu and Edit Page.

  2. Select the button and select Edit This Button.  

  3. Select Select Image.  

  4. Select an image library.

  5. Image names will be listed with preview images.

    Note: Some libraries will display a list of image categories.

  6. Scroll through the images and select the one you want.

  7. Select Save.

  8. Select Done to exit edit mode.

Import an Existing Photo

This option provides access to photos that have already been taken and saved on the device.

  1. Select Menu and Edit Page.

  2. Select the button and select Edit This Button.  

  3. Select Import Photo. Photos saved on your device will be displayed.  

    Note: At the top of this window, you can select albums to view collections of photos or use the search field to find photos by name.

  4. Select the photo you want and select Use at the top right.  

  5. Enter a name for the image and select Done.

  6. Select Save.

  7. Select Done to exit edit mode.

Use the Camera to Take a Photo

  1. Select Menu and select Edit Page.

  2. Select the button and select Edit This Button.  

  3. Select Use Camera.

  4. Select the camera button.

  5. Select Use Photo and enter a name for the image.

  6. Select Done and Save.

  7. Select Done to exit edit mode.


Changing the Skin Tone for People Images

You can change the skin tones for people images for an entire vocabulary or on a single button in a customized file.

Note: These features apply to SymbolStix images only.

Change the Skin Tone for All People Images

Use the Skin Tone feature to change the skin tone of ALL people displayed on buttons in a vocabulary.

  1. Select Menu > Vocabulary Settings and select SymbolStix Skin Tone.

  2. A choice of skin tones will be displayed. A checkmark indicates the current selection.

    • When Off is selected, images of people show their default skin tones.

    • When one of the specific skin tones is selected, all images of people will show that skin tone.

    • When Random is selected, images of people will show those skin tones randomly throughout the vocabulary file.

  3. Select the skin tone option you want. Your selection will appear after the “SymbolStix Skin Tone” setting.

  4. Select .

    As you navigate through your vocabulary, images of people will display the skin tone you selected or random skin tones.

    If you selected one of the specific skin tones, all people images of people will show that skin tone.

    All the skin tones in the page example are dark now except for one button showing mixes tones.

    If you selected Random, people images show different skin tones randomly.

    A mixture of skin tones appears in the page example.

Change the Skin Tone for People on One Button

Follow this procedure to change the skin tone for people on a single button.

  1. Go to the page that contains the button you want to edit.

  2. Select Menu and Edit Page.

  3. Select the button and select Edit This Button. The Edit Button window will display the image of the person on the button.

    Note: The Skin Tone button only appears with buttons that display certain SymbolStix images of people.

  4. Select Skin Tone. A choice of skin tones will be displayed. A checkmark indicates the current selection.

  5. Select the skin tone you want to apply to the button.

  6. Select Save. The image of the person on the button will display the skin tone you selected.

  7. Select Done to exit edit mode.
