Vocabulary Builder

Vocabulary Builder is a feature that allows you to hide all the words in the app except for the ones you choose to teach. Although it is a powerful teaching tool, it is recommended that the device user have some time to explore the system with Vocabulary Builder turned off.

Vocabulary Builder Window

From the app, select Menu and Vocab Builder. The Vocab Builder window will open.

On/Off

Select the On/Off toggle to turn Vocabulary Builder on or off. When Vocabulary Builder is turned on, only buttons for the words selected will appear. When you turn the setting off, all the hidden words can be seen again.

Save

Saves the current list. See Save a List.

Load

Open a default list or custom list previously saved. When you select Load, a window displays options to load a list from the App folder or from another location.

Restore Lists

Restore all default lists for the app.

Share

Export the current list to AirDrop, an email app, or another available app. The list will be attached as a text file to the app you select.

Keyboard

Enable or disable access to the entire Keyboard page in the vocabulary when Vocabulary Builder is turned on. When the keyboard toggle is off, you can only access the keyboard buttons enabled in Vocabulary Builder. When the keyboard toggle is on, you can access the vocabulary’s entire keyboard page.

Word Finder

Enable or disable to the Word Finder feature in the vocabulary when Vocabulary Builder is turned on. See “Using Word Finder with Vocabulary Lists”.

Word Count

A running total of the number of words in the list.

Hide/Show Words in Vocab

Quickly hide or show words by selecting icon sequences.

Exported text

“Exported text” at the top of the right pane is the default name for the file you create as you add words. When you save the list, you will give the list a name you want.

Add a new word

Enter a word to add to the current list.

Edit

Change the title of the open list. When you make the change, “Done” will replace “Edit”.

Clear

Remove all words from the current list. When you select Clear, a message asks, “Are you sure you want to delete all items?” Select OK to clear the list.

Done

Select Done when you finish adding words to the current list. The vocabulary page with the selected words displayed will open in place of editing view.

Hide and Show Words in a Vocabulary

Use the Hide/Show Words in Vocab feature to quickly hide or show words in a vocabulary.

When you select Hide/Show Words in Vocab:

Most vocab buttons will be hidden (grayed out)—except those that are always visible.
Buttons currently in the Vocab Builder list are highlighted.
The Vocab Builder navigation bar buttons will change as follows:
- Hide All hides all buttons in the vocabulary.
- Home returns to the home page.
- Show All shows all buttons in the vocabulary.
- Save saves your changes and goes back to Vocab Builder menu.
Selecting a button navigates to the next page. If the button does not navigate, selecting it toggles between the path and the button.
As buttons are selected, they are highlighted or hidden.

Create a New Word List

Create a list of words that you want to appear on the vocabulary page.

Tap in the “Add a new word” field to open the keyboard.
As you type, characters will appear in lowercase by default. Suggested words will appear across the top of the keyboard. You can select a word to add it to the list.
Note: To hide the keyboard so you can view the entire list, tap the keyboard hide symbol .
If you add duplicate characters or words to the list, they are grouped and a right arrow appears to the right of the character or word.
To view duplicates, select the dropdown arrow. The arrow will point downward. Select the image path you want.
Select Done when you finish adding words to the list.

Delete a Word from a List

Select Edit. “Edit” will change to “Done”. A red icon will appear in front of each word on the list.
Select the red icon for the word you want to delete. A Delete button will appear after the word.
Select Delete to remove the word from the list
Note: You can also swipe left on a word to delete it.
Select Done above the words to hide the Delete icons and remain in editing view.

Note: If you select Done in the upper right corner, you will exit editing view and display the vocabulary page with the words you selected.

Save a List to the App Folder

Save the words currently displayed as a list in the app folder.

Select Save. The Save options will be displayed.
Select Save in App Folder. The Save List window will open.
Tap in the field that shows the default list name, “Exported text”. The keyboard will open.
Enter a name for the list.
Note: If you try to save a file to a location in which a file by that name already exists, a message asks if you want to replace the existing file. Select Replace to replace the existing file or Keep Both to keep the existing file and the new file with a new name.
Select Save. The list will be saved to the app folder.

Save a List to Another Location

Save the words currently displayed as a list in a location of your choice.

Select Save. The Save options will be displayed.
Select Save to Another Location. The storage location for saved files and folders will open.
At the bottom of the screen under “Save as”, select Exported text to open a keyboard.
Note: “Exported text” is the default name for the text file that will be exported from the list. If the list was previously saved under a different name, the list name will appear instead of “Exported text”.
Rename the exported file.
Select Save in the upper right corner of the screen.
Note: If you try to save a file to a location in which a file by that name already exists, a message asks if you want to update the name of the current Vocab Builder List. Select Update only if you want to change the name of the list.

Load a List

To load a saved list from the app folder or another location, select Load. The Load options will be displayed.

Load from App Folder: If you select this option, the Select a File window will open a list of your files in the app folder. Select a file to open the list.

Load from Another Location: If you select this option, you can select files from your iCloud Drive or iPad.

Restore Lists

Restore all default and custom lists for the app. When you select Restore Lists, a “Lists Restored” message will tell you that your original vocab builder lists have been restored and to load the file to view the list.

To load and view your lists, select Load List to open the Load Options. For descriptions of the load options, see “Load a List”.
If you do not want to load and view your lists, select OK.

Boost Button Sizes

Go to Menu > Vocab Builder > Hide/Show words in Vocab.
Toggle ON Button Boost.
Select a button to make it large.
To manually resize the enlarged button:
1. Drag on a corner
  OR
2. Tap the button through a sequence of boosts: First tap: 3 times normal size, second tap: 2 times, third tap: 1.5 times, fourth tap: back to normal size.
Select Save and then Done.

To return the button to its normal size:

Go to Menu > Vocab Builder > Hide/Show words in Vocab.
Toggle ON Button Boost.
Tap the button through a sequence of boosts until it returns to its normal size.
Select Save and then Done.

Use Word Finder with Vocabulary Lists

When you don’t know where a word is located in a vocabulary, use Word Finder to search for the word and select the sequence of buttons that lead to it.

Toggle ON Word Finder on in the left pane of Vocabulary Builder.
Enter the word you want to find.
Select Find.

If Vocab Builder is toggled OFF:

The pathway to the word is visible. Select the right-pointing arrow to practice the motor pattern.

When you select the first button in the sequence, your home page opens with the button highlighted. When you select the button, the next button in the sequence is highlighted. When you select that button, the next button is highlighted and so forth until you reach the end of the sequence.

Note: If the word is not stored, the Find button will remain grayed out and you will not be able to select it.

If Vocab Builder is toggled ON and the word is on the vocabulary list:

The pathway to the word is visible. Select the right-pointing arrow to practice the motor pattern.

If Vocab Builder is toggled ON and the word is not on the vocabulary list:

The pathway to the word will be grayed out. Select Show to make the pathway visible. Then follow the pathway to practice the motor pattern. The word will be added to the Vocab Builder list.
