Vocabulary Conversion

The NuVoice to Empower vocabulary converter is designed to convert the vocabulary portion of the file. Extended features such as IR remote controls, computer access pages and text messaging will not convert because each AAC software handles these features differently. Given the change in platforms, software, and age of some vocabularies, some cleanup in the destination application should be expected. ​Depending on the vocabulary, the conversion process could take up to a hour to an hour to complete.

You can convert a custom vocabulary file from NuVoice .mti format to Empower .prc format to iOS app/Chat software .ce format.

Features that will be converted: Messages, labels, basic navigation, imported user images and icons, recorded or imported audio files, punctuation, and the following tools/actions: Stop Speech, Speak Message Window, Clear Display, Delete Character, Word Finder, Word Endings, Volume up/down, Volume Mute.

Note: Other tools/actions will not be converted.

Convert a Vocabulary from NuVoice to Empower Format

You can convert the vocabularies listed below so they can be imported into Empower. Given the nature of other vocabularies, they do not convert accurately enough for use in Empower. If you select a vocabulary not on this list, a message will tell you that the vocabulary is not available for conversion. Select OK to close the message.

Export a Vocabulary from NuVoice

On a dedicated or non-dedicated device, you can convert a vocabulary file from NuVoice .mti format to the .prc format that can be imported into Empower. Please note that you will be exporting a user area, not the entire device contents. We recommend that you export the user area to a USB flash drive.

  1. In NuVoice, select Toolbox and Transfer Memory Menu.

  2. Select Convert Vocabulary for Empower. The “Select Area to convert for Empower” menu opens.

  3. Select an area with a vocabulary that can be converted (see “Vocabularies that can be converted” above). You will be asked to save the file in the folder shown on the screen or choose a different folder.

  4. Select OK to save the file in the pre-set folder or select Choose different folder (for example, a USB flash drive).

  5. Use the on-screen keyboard to enter a name for the Empower conversion file and select OK.

  6. A message will tell you that the conversion is in progress.

  7. When the process is finished, a message will tell you that the conversion is complete. Select OK to close the message.

    Note: If the conversion fails, a message will tell you that the file failed to convert and to contact technical service. Select OK to close the message.

  8. Select OK to close the Transfer Memory Menu. The toolbox will be displayed.

  9. Go to the folder you selected in step 4 to find the saved .prc file.

Import a Vocabulary from NuVoice to Empower

Once you have converted your vocabulary file from NuVoice .mti format to Empower .prc format, you are ready to import it into Empower. Import times into Empower may vary. We recommend that you import the vocabulary into Empower demo software on a PC. It will be faster than using Empower on your device. To download the software, go to prc-saltillo.com/empower-emulator. ​

Please note that you will be importing a vocabulary (not a user). After you import the vocabulary, you can export it from the Empower demo software to the USB flash drive.

  1. If you saved the .prc file onto a flash drive, plug the flash drive into the computer. Otherwise, get the .prc file onto the computer.

  2. In Empower, go to Menu > Toolbox > System Settings > Export & Import. The Export & Import window will open. Select the Import tab

  3. Select Choose files for “Import a Vocabulary or Keyboard”.

  4. The Import a Vocabulary or Keyboard window will open.

  5. Use the Up One Level button to navigate to where the file is located on your computer (for example, a USB flash drive).

  6. Select the file. A message will warn that although native Empower files will import quickly, vocabularies imported from NuVoice can take up to an hour to import. The message will then ask if you want to continue. Select Continue.

  7. When the import is complete, the Export & Import window will be displayed.

  8. The imported file will now be located in Menu > Toolbox > Vocabulary > Select a Vocabulary > My Vocabularies.

Convert a Vocabulary from Empower to iOS/Chat Software Format

The Empower to iOS App/Chat Software vocabulary converter is designed to convert the vocabulary portion of the file. Extended features such as IR remote controls, web browser, and text messaging will not convert because each AAC software handles these features differently. Given the change in platforms, software, and age of some vocabularies, some cleanup in the destination application should be expected.

Export a Vocabulary from Empower to iOS App/Chat Software

  1. From the Empower Export & Import window, select the Export tab.

  2. Select Choose files for “Export a Vocabulary to iOS/NovaChat”.

  3. The Export a Vocabulary to iOS/NovaChat list will open. All vocabularies that can be converted to the .ce format are listed. Each vocabulary displays an “Export” button and a label that shows “Converts to: iOS”, “Converts to: NovaChat”, or “Converts to: iOS and NovaChat”.

  4. Select Export for the vocabulary you want to export. The “Export a Vocabulary to iOS/NovaChat” window will open.

  5. Use the Up One Level button to navigate to where you want to save the converted vocabulary file (for example, a USB flash drive).

  6. Tap in the name box to open a keyboard, enter a new name for the vocabulary, and select Finished.

    Note: If  you enter an existing file name, a message will ask if you want to overwrite the file. Select Yes to overwrite the file or select No and enter a new name.

  7. Select Convert. A message will tell you to wait while the vocabulary is being converted.

  8. When the conversion is complete, a message will tell you that the export succeeded. The .ce file will be saved to the location you selected with the name you entered. Now you can import the file to an iOS app or Chat software.

    Note: If the conversion fails, a message will tell you that the file failed to convert and to contact technical service. Select OK to close the message.

Import the Converted Vocabulary File to an iOS App or Chat Software

If you saved the converted .ce vocabulary file to a USB drive, use the steps below to import your vocabulary to an iOS app or Chat software. For additional information on transferring files, see the following topic in your iOS app or Chat software manual: “Transfer or Back Up Vocabulary Files” (iOS apps) and “Transfer Files to another Device” (Chat software).

iOS App: Import the Converted Vocabulary File from a USB Drive

  1. Plug the USB flash drive that contains the converted .ce vocabulary file into your device.

  2. In the iOS app, select Vocab and Choose New Vocab.

  3. Select Menu and Import/Export Vocab.

  4. Select Import from Files. A Files window will display the converted .ce vocabulary file.

  5. Select the file and select the Import button. The file will be imported into the vocabulary library on the device.

Chat Software: Import the Converted Vocabulary File from a USB Drive

  1. Plug the USB flash drive that contains the converted .ce vocabulary file into your device.

  2. On the device, go to Menu > Library > Menu > Import/Export.

  3. A window will display the converted .ce vocabulary file on the right.

  4. To transfer the file from the USB drive to your device, select the file and select To Device, which will be highlighted. The file will be copied to the device. When the file finishes copying, it will be listed under “Device”.
