Keyguard Instructions

These instructions apply to Via® Mini and Via® Pro devices.

Attaching the Keyguard

  1. Hold the keyguard over the screen, with the pins toward the top of the screen and the etched text toward the device.

  2. Insert one of the keyguard pins into the holder near the top of the device frame.

  3. While holding the pin in place, lift upward with your fingers to flex the middle of the keyguard upward slightly. Then insert the other pin into the holder on the other side of the device frame.

  4. Press down on the bottom portion of the keyguard to snap the tabs into place.

To raise the keyguard:

If you need temporary access to the screen for programming, changing device settings, cleaning the screen, etc., raise the keyguard.

  1. While holding the bottom edge of the device with one hand, use the thumb of your other hand to grasp the bottom edge of the keyguard in the middle.

  2. Pull upward to release the bottom tabs.

To remove the keyguard:

  1. While holding the bottom edge of the device with one hand, use the thumb of your other hand to grasp the bottom edge of the keyguard in the middle.

  2. Pull upward to release the bottom tabs.

  3. Lift upward with your fingers to flex the middle of the keyguard upward slightly.

  4. Pull the pins out of the holders at the top of the device frame.


Adjusting TouchChat® Settings for a Keyguard

Page Size Settings

Prior to fitting the keyguard in place on your device, you may need to adjust the app page size to work with the keyguard. With a page displayed in TouchChat, select Menu > Settings. Scroll down to “Page Size” and select Keyguard Inset. You will see two or three options. If the option “PRC-Saltillo” appears, select it. If ““PRC-Saltillo” does not appear, select “Generic”.

Speech Display Bar Settings

You will need to change the size of the Speech Display Bar (SDB) to work with the keyguard. Go to Menu > Settings, scroll down to “Speech Display Bar”, and depending on yout device model and keyguard, set the font, font size, number of lines, and icon display as listed below.

Via Pro or Via Air with a standard 15-, 25-, 42-, 60-, 80-location keyguard

Font = Arial

Font Size = 30 Point

Number of Lines = 1 Line

SDB Icons = Off

Keyguard Inset = PRC-Saltillo (if available) or Generic (if PRC-Saltillo is not available.)

Tip: If you need a bolder font, Georgia at 38 works well. If you need a handwritten style – for example, a – the Caudex font with a size of 38 works as well. If you prefer the Times New Roman font, the size of 42 would work.

Via Mini with a standard 15-, 25-, 42-, 60-, 80-location keyguard

Font = Arial

Font Size = 42 Point

Number of Lines = 1 Line

SDB Icons = Off

Keyguard Inset = PRC-Saltillo (if available) or Generic (if PRC-Saltillo is not available.)

Via Mini with a 15-location keyguard only

Font = Arial

Font Size = 42 Point

Number of Lines = 1 Line

In addition to the settings above, set Button Margin to 10 Point by going to Menu > Settings > Button Margin and selecting 10 Point.


Adjusting LAMP Words for Life® Settings for a Keyguard

Page Size Settings

Prior to fitting the keyguard in place on your device, you may need to adjust the LAMP WFL page size to work with the keyguard. With a page displayed in LAMP WFL, go to Menu > Settings. Scroll down to “Page Size” and select Keyguard Inset. You will see two or three options. If the option “PRC-Saltillo” appears, select it. If ““PRC-Saltillo” does not appear, select “Generic”.

Adjusting Unity® AAC Settings for a Keyguard

Page Size Settings

Prior to fitting the keyguard in place on your device, you may need to adjust the Unity AAC app page size to work with the keyguard. With a page displayed in Unity AAC, go to Menu > Settings. Scroll down to “Page Size” and select Keyguard Inset. You will see two or three options. If the option “PRC-Saltillo” appears, select it. If ““PRC-Saltillo” does not appear, select “Generic”.

You will need to change the size of the SDB to work with the keyguard. Go to Menu > Settings, scroll down to “Speech Display Bar”, and depending on your device model and keyguard, adjust the Font and Number of Lines settings as listed below.

Via Mini 8.1 with a standard 28, 36, 60-location keyguard

Finding Vocabulary Pages that Match the Keyguard Openings

Depending on the Vocabulary File you are using, some pages (typically keyboards) may not match the keyguard size. Authors have typically provided pages within the file that will work.  

To determine if a more appropriate page is available:

  1. Select Menu > Edit Page.

  2. Select Menu > Load Another Page.

  3. Scroll through the list of pages to see if the author may have provided a more appropriate page.

  4. Select the page you want and open it to confirm that the page is appropriate.

  5. Select Done and then Done.

To replace the existing page with a keyguard-specific page:

  1. Select Menu > Edit Page.

  2. Press and hold the button that links to the page that needs replacing and select Edit This Button.

  3. Scroll down to Button Actions.

  4. Select Add and choose Navigate from the list of actions.

  5. Select the more appropriate page.

  6. Select No Animation.

  7. Select Save and then Done.


Waking up the Device when a Keyguard is Attached

With Guided Access turned on, touching the device power button will open the device to your PRC-Saltillo AAC app. You won’t need to swipe up to unlock the device.

With Guided Access turned off, touching the device power button will open the device to the iOS/iPadOS home screen and you will need to swipe up to unlock the device and open the AAC app. Swiping up will be difficult on a device with a keyguard attached.

Auto-Lock Settings

The Auto-lock feature on your iPad allows you to set the amount of time that elapses before the device automatically locks or turns off the display. Your device was shipped with Auto-Lock set to 15 Minutes. If you want to change this setting:

On a non-dedicated device:

  1. Open the iOS/iPadOS Settings.

  2. Swipe down and select Display & Brightness.

  3. Select Auto-Lock and choose your new lock time.

    Notes:

    • If Guided Access is used on a non-dedicated device, you will also need to go to Accessibility > Guided Access > Display Auto-Lock and change the setting there as well.

    • If you want to use a longer auto-lock time but want to know how it’s affecting your battery life, select Battery from the Settings, swipe down to see Battery Usage by App, and check Home & Lock Screen.

On a dedicated device:

With Guided Access turned on, touching the device power button will open the device to your PRC-Saltillo AAC app. You won’t need to swipe up to unlock the device.

If the device user can’t physically access the power button to wake the device, call PRC-Saltillo Sales to open your device. Then follow the instructions under “On a non-dedicated device” above. Please note that there is a one-time charge for opening your device.
