Modify a Button

What a button speaks, how it appears, what icon is shown, and what Action it performs can be changed on any button. All button modifications are performed in Edit Mode.

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button to modify.

  3. Select Edit Button.

Tabs across the top of the menu provide the button properties for customizing all buttons.

General

The General Tab holds the Label, Message, and Image area.

Style

The Style tab holds all options for changing the appearance of the button.

Actions

The Actions tab holds the action list for determining each action a button will perform.

To modify the text that appears on the button:

Change the text in the Label field.

To modify the message spoken by the button:

When you add text in the Label field, the same text appears in the Message field. If you want the button to speak something different from the label, change the text in the Message field.


Change the Button Image

To replace the image on a button with an image from the library:

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button and select Edit Button. The Button properties window opens.

  3. Click Search to find an image with the label name or type a keyword into the text box and click Search.

  4. Select the image you want from the list.

  5. Click Select.

To change or add a picture not found in the device’s icon library:

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button and select Edit Button. The Button properties window opens.

  3. Click Import.

  4. Find the image you want, give it a unique name, and click Open.

  5. Click OK.

While editing an image, you can also click Browse and find an image by looking among the folders.


Change the Button Style

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button and select Edit Button. The Button properties window opens.

  3. Click the Style tab.

    Note: All button style properties apply to the label of the button.

  4. Use the menu options to select the font color, body color, border color, font, size, shape, and border width you want for the button.

  5. Select the Label on Top checkbox to define the label position on the button.

  6. Select the Transparent checkbox to set a transparent background color for the selected button.

  7. Select the Bold, Italic, or Underlined checkboxes to modify label text.

  8. When you finish making changes, click OK.


Change a Button Action

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button and select Edit Button. The Button properties window opens.

  3. Click the Actions tab.

  4. Choose the appropriate action from the drop-down list.

  5. Click Add.

  6. Highlight an existing action to remove it or change the order of the actions.

    Note: Each button can contain a single action or multiple actions. The current list of actions chosen for each button is listed in a preview under the "Add" button.


Add Multiple Button Actions

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button and select Edit Button. The Button Properties window opens.

  3. Click the Actions tab.

  4. Use the drop-down list to select each action and add it to the list of actions.

  5. Highlight the action to provide options to re-order or remove an action.

  6. Click OK.


Create a Linking Button

You can determine what page a button will take you to. The following linking button actions are available.

Navigate

Links to a new page and requires another button hit to move away from this page.

Visit

Links to a page for a single hit and then goes back to previous page.

Jump to Page

Links to a new page for a single hit and then takes you back to the page that has the jump to page button.

Navigate Back

Goes back to the previous page

Navigate to Home

Links to the Home page of the vocabulary file.

To create a linking button:

  1. Navigate the page that includes the button you want to edit.

  2. Select Edit Mode.

  3. Right-click the button you want to link to the page.

  4. Select Edit Button. The Button Properties window will open.

  5. In the General tab, type a label for the button and add an image (optional).

  6. Select the Actions tab.

  7. Select a navigation action for the button from the drop-down list (Navigate, Visit, Jump to Page, Navigate Back, or Navigate to Home) and click Add.

    • If you chose Navigate, Visit, or Jump to Page, a list of pages to link to will be displayed.

    • If you chose Navigate Back or Navigate to Home, skip to step 9.

  8. Select the page you want to link the button to and click Choose. The page name appears in the list of actions for the button.

    Note: If the page doesn't already exist, click New and create a new page to link the button to.

  9. If you want to include animation, select the Animation button. Animation gives the appearance that the page is moving off the screen and that the new page is moving into that position. From the Choose Animation Type window, select the animation type you want and click OK.

    Note: If the button already included one or more actions, you can remove them or rearrange the order of actions. To remove an action, highlight it by clicking it and select Remove. To rearrange actions, select an action and select Up or Down.

  10. To complete the link, click OK.


Change the Way a Button Speaks

The way a button speaks can be modified by editing the button action or changing the settings. The following is a list of the speaking button actions that are available:

Add message to Display

Displays the text of the button’s message in the Speech Display Bar (SDB), but does not speak the words

Play Audio

Plays any recorded message that is assigned to the button

Speak

Speaks all the content in the display

Speak Label Only

Speaks the button’s label, but doesn’t display the text

Speak Last Sentence

Speaks the last sentence in the display

Speak Last Word

Speaks the last word in the display without repeating all the words

Speak Message Only

Speaks the button’s message, but doesn’t display the text

Speech Message

Speaks the button’s message and displays the text

Speech Settings

All of the above actions are dependent on the Speech Settings. There is an over-all Speech On/Off setting in the Settings Menu.

To turn all speech on or off:

  1. Click Settings.

  2. Click Speech Output.

  3. Check or uncheck the Speech off setting to match your current needs.

More specific Speech settings determine when individual characters, words, or sentences are spoken.

To change speech output settings:

  1. Click Settings.

  2. Click Speech Output.

  3. The list provides options for speaking characters, words, and sentences.

  4. Check or uncheck each option as needed.

To modify the speech action on a button:

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Right-click the button to open the menu.

  3. Choose the Edit Button option. A button properties screen will appear.

  4. Click the Actions tab. The button action properties will appear.

  5. Highlight existing actions (if any) and choose to remove them.

  6. Choose the appropriate Speak action from the action listing.

  7. Click Add.


Create a Date/Time Button

You can create a button that speaks and shows the date, time, or both in the Speech Display Bar (SDB).

  1. Go to the page on which you want to create the button.

  2. Select Edit Mode.

  3. Right-click the button you want to use.

  4. Select Edit Button.

  5. Add a button label, message, and image.

    Optional: Select the Style tab and set the appropriate style.

  6. Select the Actions tab.

  7. Select the dropdown arrow to open a list of actions.

  8. Select Add Time/Date to Display.

  9. Select Add to open the date and time options.

  10. Select Display Date and Time, Display only the Date, or Display only the Time.

  11. Select OK. The current actions for the button will be listed.

    Optional: Remove any existing actions for the button that you do not want to include or change the order in which the actions should function.

  12. Select OK. When you select the button, it should speak and show the date, time, or both in the SDB.


Hide or Show Buttons

  1. Select Edit Mode.

  2. Select Hide Mode.

  3. You have three options:

    • Choose buttons one by one to hide or show.

    • Select Hide All to hide all buttons on the current page.

    • Select Show All to show all the buttons that had been previously hidden.

  4. To exit Hide Mode, select Hide Mode again.
